The heroic episodes recounted
in the works of Homer can be admired in the ceramics of ancient
Attica, which (mirabilmente, amazingly, extraordinarily) depict
Achilles and Ajax playing a game of chess; next to them are
these beautiful shields with reliefs that represent mythological
deeds. Created using a contemporary aesthetic language, my "shields"
express my memory of this piece.
At various times I have explored the theme of the shield, creating
reliefs within geometric shapes. The works consist of brightly
coloured squares and circles, some with textured effects, fired
with oxidation firing. To produce these pieces, a plaster mould
is made from a polystyrene model, and the final ceramic piece
is produced by slipcasting or pressing clay into the mould.
